Trail Etiquette
Our favorite pastime is growing in popularity, as evidenced by increased
trail traffic, and difficulty in getting campsites.
Included in this increase of traffic are many people new to hoses and trailriding. We also
encounter many "green" horses, especially in the spring.
There are numerous trail etiquette rules that when followed can help ensure a safe ,
enjoyable time for riders. These rules apply to groups as well as individuals.
Listed here are a few of the basics.
1. Have you horse and gear in shape. (Wouldn't hurt if you were too).
2. Teach your horse to walk at a ground covering pace. A horse that jogs or canters to
keep up can get the other horses all fired up. Going 1 step further don't hang back on
purpose then hit high gear to catch up. Every other horse in the group will want to
"go" also.
3. Trail right of ways, groups or individuals, everyone move to the right.
4. Leave room between horses, 1-2 horse lengths is acceptable. When passing let those in
front know so you don't startle them or their horse.
5. Walk your horse up and down hill. Safety for you, your horse and other riders, makes
this the best choice. Even if it's less fun.
6. When using multi- user trails, be courteous to other users.
Trail etiquette is part common sense and part courtesy. Ride to have fun and stay safe!
